Stewardship

Stewardship is about being grateful, responsible stewards of all the gifts we receive from God. The Letter of James reminds us: “every generous act of giving with every perfect gift comes from our loving Father”. In other words, even the gifts we give from a generous heart express the goodness and kindness of God who is generous through us. We generally speak of our gifts in three broad categories: treasure, time, and talent.

Treasure – The tradition of giving back to God and to the church comes from the Biblical practice of “tithing,” which means to give back a tenth of our earnings to God (Numbers 18:26). This is not simply paying your dues to the church. Rather, it is supporting God’s work in the world through our church.

Time and talent – We see stewardship as more than simply contributing money to our church; it’s also about contributing time and talents and volunteering for ministry and mission. We often view time as our most precious commodity and therefore it is the most difficult for us give. Stewardship is about reaching out to build relationships from a perspective of abundance instead of scarcity. We are called to spend time using our God-given talents to help the world around us and to serve Christ in the world.
