Common Questions
Q: What can I expect from Sunday church services?
A: Episcopalians worship in a variety of styles—from very formal, ancient, and multi-sensory services with traditional music and vestments (robes), to informal gatherings with contemporary music. But no matter the style, all Episcopal worship is rooted in the Book of Common Prayer, which provides a familiar structure across all congregations.
At Ascension, you’ll notice that people express their faith in different ways: some stand, sit, or kneel at different times; others may bow or make the sign of the cross. We embrace this diversity. Please feel free to participate in ways that are comfortable for you. We also have three different services on Sundays. Each has their own personality.
Q: Is the Episcopal Church liturgical? What does that mean?
A: Yes, the Episcopal Church is liturgical. This means that worship follows a set form and uses prayers and rituals that remain consistent throughout each season of the church year. This creates a rhythm that can feel grounding and familiar.
For newcomers, the liturgy might feel a little confusing at first—like learning a new dance. But once you get the steps, it becomes a comforting and meaningful experience.
Q: What is Holy Eucharist?
A: Holy Eucharist is the central act of worship in Episcopal churches and is often referred to as Communion. Although service styles may differ, Holy Eucharist remains consistent. It is a sacred moment where we remember Jesus’ Last Supper and receive bread and wine as a sign of God’s grace.
Q: When are services held?
A: From August to May:
7:45 AM – Contemplative Eucharist
9:00 AM – All-Ages Eucharist
11:00 AM – Traditional Eucharist with Choir
12:30 PM – Fellowship Reception
From June to July:
7:45 AM – Contemplative Eucharist
10:00 AM – Traditional Eucharist with Hymns
11:00 AM – Fellowship Reception
Q: Where do I park?
A: Parking is available behind the church in our lot. Street parking is also available, and additional parking can be found at the courthouse lot just a block away.
Q: What are the Sacraments?
A: Sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ. In the Episcopal Church, there are two primary Sacraments: Baptism and Holy Eucharist.
There are also other sacramental rites that are meaningful in the lives of some:
Holy Matrimony
Reconciliation (Confession)
Ordination
Confirmation
Holy Unction (anointing for healing)
Q: Do you believe the bread and wine become Christ?
A: In the Episcopal Church, we believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. While we don’t define exactly how this happens, we believe that Christ is truly present through the consecration of the elements. It is not just a symbolic act—it is a sacred mystery. All who seek a deeper relationship with Christ are welcome to receive Holy Eucharist.
